A public and one reputed state University of Edinburg, Texas, the University of Texas-Pan American stands as one of the few colleges to have been a doctoral-affiliated institution and that in the States. Located to the west side of Rio Grande Valley, the capital city, this college happens to be one of the oldest institutions in Texas. A state of the art college is the largest of the ones in the state with over 20,053 active students to its name. UTPA as the short-form of its name, it was founded in the year of 1927 which defines its stay in the States.

The foundation of UTPA is also one of interesting kind. The university was the recipient of its first character in the year 1826, which was signed by the then governing body of universities in Texas and are known commonly as University of Texas System. The name ‘University of Texas-Pan American’ was the later choice when Edinburg College was considered non-suiting to the institute and the year 1933 saw the inauguration and launch of the new named Edinburg Junior College. The request forwarded by the Board of Trustees was also a key factor to the change of the institutional name of the UTPA. When the UTPA started to offer the degrees relating to various faculties like arts, languages and sciences, it was considered appropriate to name the junior collge with one American title and a College and hence Pan American College was founded. As for the University part, it had long time coming when degrees as well as masters relating to university status were affiliated to the institute. Then the year 1973 brought the so-called University of Texas System to its aid and from there the institution was overseen by the Board of Trustees as University of Texas-Pan American.

It was not easy for the UTPA to make it this far on easy basis. The hurdles were like the destined prospects to the UTPA and it had to pass each one to face the next. The hurdles appeared in various forms, one of which being the protection of nearly 40 years of struggle and its legacy. It was not at all possible for the UTPA as it was as turbulent as it got when talks about its admission rattled the foundations of the UTPA. Its endowments, students and buildings all suffered the worst of the faith when they were under-rated, disbanded and deteriorated respectively. Either be a student, trustee or the townspeople, all were signing up to take up a shot at the time of admissions to only Hispanic students. This left a struggling UTPA on its knees but the recovery, even if Half-a-dozen years late, was made and with the funds being renewed and buildings renovated by the help from the University of Texas System , UTPA was all set up to start afresh.

The after-name change time was kind of fruitful for the UTPA when enrollment was reaching a never-before-seen height. The year 1984 saw UTPA as one of the 131 colleges to have been a part of the All-University Status and that saw students flowing over to make way to get a part in the growing enrollment. The agreement of merger with the University of Texas System is also was a major part for the enrollment of the students in a good range of 550-600 when veterans made their  family return to the colleges. This sudden increase in the flow of students had the UTPA to renovate and build the buildings needed for the students to get into. This was the start to life of Main Campus, Starr County Upper-Level Center, Coastal Studies Laboratory and also some pairs of McAllen Teaching Site. When the increase in the students of law was seen, it was without the doubt for the UTPA to get itself a new law school which came as helping hand in the administration. Again the year 1992 saw UTPA get its hand into one forced-closed local college due to a desperate gap in enrollments. All these renovations and re-building was an unknown and obvious step of UTPA slowly turning into a one reputed university.

Then came the fresh and exciting yet one challenging step, the division of collges. When the number of the enrolling International Students did get on the front foot, the college was now facing the increase in rate of students at 60%. The demands of the new technology based era were catching up to UTPA’s Board of Trustees which lead to the adding of the Programmed division of Departments of colleges. The offerings that were finalized in the program are the following academic divisions.

·         College of Business Administration

·         College of Arts and Humanities

·         College of Education

·         College of Engineering and Computer Science

·         College of Health Sciences and Human Services

·         College of Science and Mathematics

·         College of Social and Behavioral Sciences

·         College of Physics and Geology

Also the UTPA is the host to a degree so rare that it got the UTPA to be the first ever institution of Texas to offer it to the students, the Army ROTC. When that was accomplished, UTPA was now offering degrees in doctorates for the subjects relating to the Educational leadership and also the field of Professional Counceling. Being in the state of technological era for some considerable time has lead UTPA to become a socially active institute which has performed in about 45,000 hours of public service whenever hosting the Summer or Centrifuge camps for the students.

The University of Texas-Pan American has its academics as its plus point when compared to its competitors. Its Education System includes one Department of Kinesiology, Department of Teacher Education and Leadership, and the infamous Dyslexia Center along with the Department of Psychology and Counseling. The active part of UTPA, the School of Business has mainly four major departments (management, accounting, marketing and finance,) at both the levels undergraduate or graduate; And then there is The School of Science along with the Arts have the Department of Art, the Department of Music, the Department of Social Studies and Philosophy along with the Department of Communications to its name.
