The eighty seven years old American businessman and publisher is the CEO of Playboy Enterprises as well as Editor–in- chief of Playboy Magazine. He stated publishing Playboy magazine in 1953 and expanded his business to Playboy Enterprises. Born on April 9, 1926 in Chicago, Illinois as the eldest son of Grace Caroline and Glenn Lucius Hefner, he was named High Marston Hefner at birth. He is from Swedish, German and English background. He was raised in a conservative Methodist family. He attended the Steinmetz high School to complete his high school studies. Later he attended the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign and  holds Bachelor’s degree of Arts in psychology and minors in creative writing and arts. Following that he attended Northwestern University to study sociology but dropped out after a semester.

Hefner started his career as a writer for a military newspaper in the US Army during the World War II, soon after high school. Completing college he worked as copywriter for Esquire, but after being denied a pay raise of $ 5 a week he left the job. He launched Playboy in December 1953, collecting the fund required by mortgaging his furniture, taking loan from 45 investors one of them being his mother. The magazine was originally titled to be “Stag Party”. The first edition featured the nude photo of Marilyn Monroe from her calendar shoot back in 1949. It was a revolutionary step received a warm welcome by over 50000 sales. The Crooked Man, a science fiction short story based on homosexuality published in Playboy brought in a tremor and made clear that ‘Playboy sold sex as Sports Illustrated sold sports’. He was once arrested for selling lustful literature and possessing nude photos of Jayne Mansfield but it wasn’t found offensive.

Hefner also worked in television and films. He budgeted the documentary Discovering the Girl, based on life of Clara Bow. He also co-financed the reality series The Girl Next Door which ran for 90 episodes from 2005 to 2009. He also appeared on the documentaries Hugh Hefner : Playboy, Activist and Rebel in 1996. In addition to this he hosted TV shows Playboy’s Penthouse, and Playboy After Dark. For his work in the entertainment industry he has a star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame. He has also appeared on films too, most notably in Miss March which earned him Razzie award nomination, and James Bond short story A Midsummer Night’s Doom.

Hefner suffered from a minor stroke at the age of 59. Since then he changed lifestyle and handed over Playboy empire to his daughter Christie in 1988. They separated in 1998 and were officially divorced eleven years later. The first publisher to become a celebrity is active in social welfare. He has helped the fund raising program to restore the Hollywood sign, has donated to the University of Southern Carolina’s School of Cinematic Arts, has conducted fund raising events for Much Love Animal Rescue and Generation Rescue. An endangered species of rabbit Sylvilagus palustris hefneri is named after him.
