The American film director, producer, scriptwriter and businessman Steven Spielberg was born in Cincinnati, Ohio on December 18, 1946 from the parents Leah Adler, a restaurateur and concert pianist and Arnold Spielberg, an electrical engineer, he was named Steven Allan Spielberg at birth. He belongs to Jewish descent. Spielberg was raised in Haddon, Township, New Jersey and Scottsdale, Arizona. He watched a movie during his childhood and started dreaming of his career in the same. He graduated his high school from Saratoga High School in 1965. Upon graduation he made two unsuccessful attempts to get admission at University of Southern California School of Theatre, Film and Television. Subsequently he joined California State University at Long Beach to study English. But he didn’t complete the college education.
Steven began working on films from the age of 12. His first film was a nine minute 8mm film The Last Gunfight. And when he was 13, he made a 40 minute war movie Escape to Nowhere which earned him a prize. His first independent film was a 140 minute science fiction Firelight which made a profit of $100 with its shows in the local theatres. His first movie to be released in theatre was 1968 short film Amblin’. A long term deal with Universal Studios followed that.
Spielberg directed different episodes of the television movies Night Gallery, Marcus Welby, M.D., The Name of the Game among others, also TV shows like Owen Marshall: Councelor at Law, The Psychiatrist, and also TV series such as Columbo. On the merit of his work he got other TV films Duel, Something Evil, The Exorcist are few to mention. He got feature film breakthrough from The Sugarland Express. The next project Jaws was a great hit, making good earning and winning three Academy Awards. The new taste of his directorial was warmly welcomed. The major breakthrough in his career was his 1977 film Close Encounters of the Third Kind which earned two Oscar, an Oscar nomination for himself and six Academy Awards nominations. He continued as a director, also trying his hand at production and script writing in the films E.T. the Extra Terrestrial, The Color Purple, Poltergeist, The Twilight zone, The Gonnies, Always and others. He received much support from the critics too. The 1993 adventure Jurassic Park was another greatest hit, highest earning film to that date. The next film Schindler’s List fetched Academy Award for Best Director and the film was listed among the Greatest Films ever.
In 1994 he founded the Dreamworks Studio and continued his new projects through it. First much concentrated on adventures and fiction, Spielberg also addressed humanistic issues such as war, trade, slavery, terrorism, in his recent films. He has given the most influential films like Amistad, Indiana Jones (& sequels), Saving Private Ryan, Minority Report, Catch Me If U Can, Munich, War Horse, Linchon, Men In Black (& sequels), Transformer (& sequels) are just a few to mention. Apart from big screen he has also worked in TV series such as Band of Brothers, Terra Nova, The Pacific, and many more. He has also made many cartoons especially loved by kids. Tiny Toon Adventures, Pinky and the Brain, The Adventures of Tintin Family Dogs were the most successful ones.
Spielberg has bagged many awards including Golden Globe Awards, Oscar, Lifetime Achievements and many more. He has been honored with degrees by several universities including Boston University, Brown University. He has been knighted as Commander of the Order of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II.
